X-rays are the most commonly performed imaging test in South Africa

They are used daily in both private and public healthcare settings because they are fast, cost-effective, and essential for trauma, chest conditions, dental exams, and orthopaedics.

Chest X-rays play a major role in monitoring tuberculosis

South Africa has one of the highest TB burdens globally, and chest X-rays remain a key tool for detection, monitoring, and treatment follow-up—especially in rural areas where access to advanced imaging may be limited.

X-rays are safe when performed correctly

Radiology practices follow strict South African radiation safety regulations. A single chest X-ray exposes a patient to far less radiation than an international flight.

What are General X-Rays?

General radiography or X-ray imaging uses radiation to visualize the internal structures of the body.

X-ray beams pass through the human body, striking a detector to produce an image. The internal structures of the body attenuates the X-ray beam, casting “shadows”on the detector which creates the image.

X-rays are the most commonly performed radiology examination, used to assess a wide variety of conditions including, but not limited to, skeletal diseases, lung infections, arthritis and cancer.

Women who are pregnant must alert their doctor and the radiographer if they are being scheduled for an X-ray examination.
