“Sonar” is the local slang
Most South Africans casually call an ultrasound a “sonar,” even though sonar technically refers to underwater sound mapping. The nickname stuck — and everyone knows exactly what you mean!
SA produces some of the world’s top sonographers
South Africa’s radiography and sonography programs are known internationally for their strong clinical training. Many SA-trained sonographers work in the UK, UAE, Australia, and Canada.
Gender reveals are BIG
From balloons to smoke bombs, ultrasound gender reveals are a whole event — sometimes happening right in the parking lot after the scan!
Wildlife vets use ultrasound too
Ultrasound isn’t just for humans — elephants, rhinos, lions, seals, and even penguins at SA wildlife centres undergo ultrasound scans for pregnancy checks and health monitoring.
What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to image the body. The reflected sound waves are detected by the probe and images are displayed on the screen.
There are no known harmful side effects.
Ultrasound is mostly used to evaluate soft tissue and can be utilized to gain information about a wide variety of conditions, including pregnancy, gallstones, organ pathology, muscle and tendon conditions. Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins.
Gross obesity may interfere with the technical quality of the ultrasound study.
